TRAINING

>
> 1) My biggest concern is my eyesight. Would it be better to take contacts and glasses or just a couple
> pairs of glasses?
>
Combination of contact lenses and glasses is better. Just make sure you have enough cleaning supply.
>
>
> 2) What type of clothing should we bring to train in? I've noticed in pretty much every martial arts special that black is what's worn in Indonesia, will this be expected of us? Should we bring our own black training clothes? Will they be provided?
> Whatever training clothes is comfortable for you. Any color is welcome. You also have the option of buying traning clothes on site. Otherwise please bring your own clothes.
>
>
>

CLOTHING

>
> 1)How many changes of clothes will be needed? Should we bring all 2 1/2 -3 weeks worth of clothing? Will there be laundry facilities so that we could only need to bring a weeks worth of clothing?
> There is laundry facility on site, so it's one choice how many clothes to bring.
>

> 2) What types of clothing should we bring for the special events?
>
For the dinner, please bring casual attire. No T-shirt please.
>
>
> 3) Suits? Dress shirts and ties? What is the best way of dressing to show respect without looking arrogant about money?
>
Dress shirt will be appropriate. No suit is needed. An example will be collard shirt and a pair of long pants.
>
>
> 4) I planned on wearing linen/ cotton pants and tee shirt, and my converse for class and training. Is that ok? Should I bring a dress for special occasion? If so, can we wear fancy flip flops, or do I have to wear heals? As I have allot of tattoos, should I be prepared, in any form of dress, to NOT show them?
>
> I can wear long sleeves, but my hand one will still show, will that be ok? I don't want to be disrespectful. Any clothing customs I should be aware of, on behalf of specifically being a woman. ( i.e.. don't show shoulders or ankles?)
>
That is appropriate for training. Just like silat training in the US, there is no strict dress code for training. Please follow these for the dinner: A simple dress, flip flop is not suggested. High heels are OK, but not required. Covered tattoos are appreciated. A top with long sleeves is enough to cover up the tattoos.
>
> 5) I had not planned on bring a swim suit, but should I?
>
> There is an oppurtunity to swim in the ocean should you choose to.
>
>

FOOD

>
> 1) I am more than willing to abide by customs and do my best to eat right handed (I just may starve to
> death), but what about things that would typically be torn or broken (like large pieces of bread) would it
> be appropriate to use one's left hand at that time to tear it?
>
>
>
Eating left handed is not a crime in Indonesia. Handing anything, not just food, with left hand, on the other hand, is consider dis-respectful. Fortunately, it won't get you into trouble.
>
> 2) I can not wait to experience the food!! What if something does not strike your taste buds fancy at a dinner. Is there a etiquette to not offending you host. Or do you do like in my family, and just eat it no matter what?
>
A no-thank you bite will give you the chance to experience the food. It's OK to not like the food and put it aside or give it to somebody that enjoy it more.
>
>
> 3) Should I only drink bottled water? Is chewing gum disrespectful?
> Bottled water is always safer. Try the boiled water that is provided. If your stomach can take it, bottled water is not necessary. Do not drink the tap water! It's not treated. Chewing gum is OK, but not on the palace dinner.
>
>

SPIRITUALITY

>
> 1) I am very excited to learn more about healings and the spiritual side of things, or "Daya Batin" as the camp schedule says, and am hoping to videotape some of this? Would this be allowed or appropriate?
> No video taping is allowed. It is even forbidden for anybody, including the one who does the ritual, to record with any media. Picture is limited to some events.
>
>
>

CUSTOMS

>
> 1) The camp schedule repeats "mustika agung sudamala initiation" several times, breaking it up into 9
> groups. What is this?
>
It is a spiritual initiation. Every groups is limited to 5 people for private instruction by higher teacher.
>
>
> 2) How should women be treated in a Muslim country? In the west we treat them, more or less, as equals. We acknowledge them, talk directly to them, make eye contact, ask questions.
>
Do these ideas change a great deal? Should we focus most of our attention on males when we are in mixed company? Direct our questions to males?

All is the same. Women is not treated or behave differently than man. Indonesia is not a Muslim country, particularly our group is not Muslim.
>
>
>
>
> 3) Should we expect to pause our training or meals or recreation for the muslim's time of call to prayer? If so, how should we conduct ourselves during the call to prayer?
>
The call to prayer have nothing to do with any other activities. No one is expected to pause or even give extra attention to it.
>
>
> 4) Can I bring a camera, if so, are there camera rules? (Like, don't ever take a picture of that sacred temple during prayer.)
>
Something is not to be photographed. We will let you know when it's out of question.
>
>
> 5) Last weird one......I think it always a good idea, when being in someone's graces, to bring a small gift for thanks. Is that weird? or should that be left until we get back...thank you cards and such.......
>
That's a noble thought and always a nice thing to do for your host.

MONEY EXCHANGE

>
> 1) Concerning shopping should we exchange most of our money in Bali, or should will there be a place to exchange money closer to where we will be staying?
>

2) Should I bring a small amount of cash, or none at all...cards only?

Money exchange is everywhere. Please bring a new 100 dollar bills with newer serial number and newer BIG HEAD president. The smaller denomination is hard to exchange if not impossible. They demand no crease and very pristine bill. Credit card is scarce, so please use cash for most transactions.

LODGING

>
> 1) What type of place will we be staying in? Hotel? Cabins? Will we need to bring anything of our own for sleeping arrangements?
>
2) Should I be prepared to share accommodations with someone?

We'll all be staying in a motel with double occupancy.

PLANE FLIGHT

>
>
>
> 1) I have never flown internationally, and i have not flown after 911. So I don't know the rules anymore. Any of these items not allowed to bring? Aspirin, Soap, perfume, razor, shampoo, deodorant, toothpaste/ Listerine. If they are not allowed. Will there be a chance to purchase items when we get there?
>
You can buy all above mentioned toiletories in Yogya. Please see http://www.tsa.gov for flying requirement.
>
> 2) If I got the chance to bring little gifts for friends to take back....is there any glaring thing that wouldn't be allowed on the plane that I could easily take for granted? I hear, Fruit, for instance in some places, is one of those items
>
> No fruit and unprossed meat is allowed. see tsa website for detail.
